Celebrating Connection, Culture and Competition: The Australian Deaf Games

  • Members News

The Australian Deaf Games is Australia’s premier national multi-sport event for Deaf and hard of hearing athletes, officials and communities. Held every four years, the Games bring people together from across Australia (and neighbouring countries) to celebrate sport, connection, culture and Deaf pride.

At the heart of the event is a deep commitment to Deaf culture and accessibility. What sets the Australian Deaf Games apart from other multi-sport events in Australia is its deep connection to Deaf culture and accessibility. The Australian Deaf Games is uniquely shaped by Deaf culture and accessibility. Communication access through Auslan, visual information and inclusive environments ensures Deaf and hard of hearing participants can fully engage, compete and connect in a space designed for the community, by the community.

Beyond the competition results, the Games have a lasting and meaningful impact on people’s lives. The Games create a powerful sense of belonging and connection for Deaf and hard of hearing Australians. Beyond sport, they strengthen community ties, celebrate Deaf identity and culture, build confidence, and create lifelong friendships and networks that continue long after the Games conclude.

The Australian Deaf Games also provides opportunities for everyone, regardless of experience level, ensuring the event remains welcoming and inclusive. The Australian Deaf Games welcomes everyone, from first-time participants to elite Deaf athletes and experienced officials. The event provides opportunities to compete, volunteer, officiate and socially connect in a supportive and inclusive environment that encourages growth, leadership and participation at all levels.

Looking ahead, excitement is building for the next edition of the Games, with anticipation growing across the Deaf and wider communities. The 2026 Games on the Sunshine Coast present an exciting opportunity to showcase Deaf sport and culture in one of Australia’s most vibrant and accessible destinations. There is strong excitement around bringing together thousands of participants, supporters and visitors in a region known for its community spirit, world-class venues and welcoming atmosphere.

The 2026 Australian Deaf Games will feature a diverse program of sports across team and individual competitions, highlighting the incredible talent within Deaf sport. Popular headline events are expected to include basketball, netball, football and athletics, alongside a range of emerging and community-focused sports that encourage broad participation.

Importantly, the Games aim to leave a meaningful legacy beyond the event itself, building momentum for the future of Deaf sport and community connection. The hope is that the 2026 Games leave a lasting legacy of greater visibility, inclusion and opportunity for Deaf and hard of hearing Australians. Beyond the event itself, the Games aim to inspire future generations, strengthen pathways in Deaf sport, and build broader awareness and appreciation of Deaf culture across Australia.

For those interested in getting involved or learning more, there are plenty of ways to stay connected.
