Special Olympics Australia has launched a new online course through the Inclusive Sport Academy to support officials in creating more inclusive competition environments for athletes with intellectual disability and/or autism.

Titled Officiating Inclusive Sports Competitions for Athletes with Intellectual Disability and/or Autism, the course is the first resource of its kind in Australia focused specifically on inclusive officiating. It provides practical guidance for officials working across both Special Olympics programs and broader community and mainstream sport settings.

The course aligns with the Australian Sports Commission’s Modern Approach to Officiating and highlights the important role officials play in shaping safe, positive and meaningful sporting experiences.

Content within the course covers key areas such as effective communication strategies, divisioning, inclusive approaches to Unified Sports, purposeful rule adaptations, understanding behaviours, and creating supportive competition environments.

While developed by Special Olympics Australia, the course is designed for a wide audience, including officials involved in school sport, club competitions, and representative pathways where athletes with intellectual disability and/or autism are participating.

Special Olympics Australia CEO Jamie O’Connor noted the importance of building capability across the officiating workforce, particularly as inclusive participation continues to grow across the sector. The course aims to increase confidence and equip officials with practical skills to better support all athletes in competition environments.

Delivered as a self-paced online program, the course includes video modules, real-world scenarios, interactive quizzes and reflective activities to support practical application.

The initiative responds to a growing need across Australian sport to move beyond traditional rule enforcement and towards a more participant-centred approach to officiatin.

The course is now available via the Inclusive Sport Academy, developed in partnership with Playbk Sports and supported by Gallagher.
